A Partnership Built Over Decades: The Vision Behind Bhikha & Popat Advogados
The conversation with Nazir Bhikha and Momede Popat, held as part of Encontre Advogados’ visit to Bhikha & Popat Advogados, revealed much more than the history of a law firm. It offered insight into the foundations of a professional partnership built over decades, shaped by ethics, discipline, trust, and a clear understanding of what it means to practise law in Mozambique.
The relationship between the two partners predates the firm’s formal establishment in 2011. Their professional journey together began in the 1990s, when Nazir Bhikha, already a lawyer, became Momede Popat’s supervisor and internship mentor at an insurance company. This professional relationship gave rise to friendship, mutual learning, and, above all, a shared vision of establishing a law firm grounded in rigour, professional ethics, and an unwavering commitment to its clients.
Today, Bhikha & Popat Advogados stands out for its consistent work in commercial and corporate law, litigation and arbitration, employment law, banking and finance, and insurance, areas in which the partners have accumulated more than 25 years of combined experience. However, the firm’s identity extends beyond technical expertise. It is also defined by its position within the market and its approach to the challenges facing the country.
During the discussion with Encontre Advogados, Momede Popat emphasised that lawyers play a crucial role in building trust in Mozambique, where both local and foreign investors face well-known challenges. A lawyer’s responsibility goes beyond resolving problems. It also involves anticipating them, drafting robust contracts, establishing corporate governance structures, mitigating risks, and ensuring that business projects are viable and sustainable. Preventive legal advice, he noted, is now just as essential as litigation.
The firm’s institutional partnership with SRS Advogados, which has been in place for almost eleven years, has further strengthened its capabilities. What began as a client referral arrangement evolved into knowledge-sharing, specialised training, and access to projects requiring international expertise. The exchange of teams, with Mozambican lawyers working in Lisbon and Portuguese lawyers in Maputo, broadened technical expertise and strengthened the firm’s position in highly regulated sectors such as energy, oil and gas, and compliance.
Looking to the future, Nazir Bhikha highlights the need to consolidate excellence in traditional practice areas while expanding into sectors that are increasingly shaping Mozambique’s economy, particularly energy, oil and gas, and anti-money laundering. Momede Popat adds that rapid legislative developments require a strong internal culture of continuous learning. At the firm, knowledge is shared across the team: each new law and emerging challenge becomes the subject of research by a junior or senior lawyer, who subsequently shares the findings with colleagues.
The final part of the discussion focused on Encontre Advogados. Both partners acknowledged that the directory has filled a longstanding gap in Mozambique: until now, there had been no dedicated platform enabling clients to identify lawyers according to their expertise and areas of practice. For Momede Popat, the directory serves as the “new Yellow Pages”, but with greater depth and careful curation. For Nazir Bhikha, the platform represents a significant step forward, enabling both domestic and international clients to find professionals whose profiles match their specific needs.
In an expanding and increasingly competitive market, Encontre Advogados makes legal services more accessible and transparent, while bringing the profession closer to international standards of visibility and specialisation.
The conversation with Nazir Bhikha and Momede Popat makes it clear that Bhikha & Popat Advogados is more than a law firm. It is a lifelong endeavour, built on an enduring commitment to ethics, technical excellence, continuous learning, and the development of Mozambique’s legal landscape.
